This past month, the Supreme Court ruled 9-0 that a Catholic Foster Care organization could keep helping needy children. What was their “crime?” The actions that caused them to almost be litigated out of business? The fact that they believe and teach that marriage is to be between a man and a woman for life. That’s it. Yes, increasingly the moral teachings of the Bible are not merely dismissed, they are being made illegal. How did we get to the point where 9 justices are now making or remaking the fundamental moral teachings of our culture, our communities, our education, even seeking to determine the teachings in our homes and in our Churches? How indeed. The 9-0 Fulton Case may be a “victory” for now, but the work to proclaim the moral teachings of the Bible for all is going to get harder in the days to come. Time to roll up our sleeves, especially amidst the small victories of the moment.
As Christians, we have to decide:
Are we going to be people who honor the teaching and moral directions of the Bible, the wisdom from God, or not?
Are the ten commandments authoritative in our life, or not?
Are they defensible, not merely in our lives, but in the culture at large, or not?
Do we believe there are moral teachings that bind us to a higher authority or do we believe that we are the final say in moral things?
Scripture mentioned in this episode:
Judges 21:25
In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.
