What causes estrangement between parents and children? And what are the effects of estrangement on our society?
We’re all sinful people, we all make mistakes, but we’re still called to be the best parents, and the best children, that we can be. Estrangement from those we love is a source of great pain. How do we heal from that pain and move toward reconciliation?
Reconciliation comes when we love unconditionally, forgive others fully, and seek forgiveness for our own shortcomings with humility. When two people are estranged, they must both be able to have empathy and see things from the other’s perspective. As Christians, we know that only God’s love is perfect and able to forgive fully. When we put the love of God to work in our relationships, we’re able to love with God’s love. We can heal, we can move forward, we can find reconciliation.
Scripture mentioned in this episode:
Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
John 13:35
By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.
